It Takes a City – Cloud Backup Goes Big

Cloud design, architecture and migration services

Not long ago, the city of Asheville, NC migrated their infrastructure backups and disaster recovery to a cloud backup solution utilizing Amazon Web Services (AWS). This not only saved the city government a lot in expenses, it provided the city a fail-safe in case of disaster. If something major was to happen, the operational infrastructure systems could be brought back online within hours. Not days. Not months. Hours. This has become more and more prevalent in government as there has been a lot of pressure to streamline costs and make government agencies – especially on the city/local level – more efficient.

So what does that mean for your business? Can you afford a total and complete cloud backup solution and disaster recovery?

The key behind cloud backup is how fast you can recover your data if needed. This depends on your service provider and how much bandwidth you have at your site. If you’re running a 100 MBit connection, you could probably dedicate 25Mbit to data transfer and as long as your data needs aren’t massive, you could easily backup your data nightly, or even hourly. A dedicated data connection would be ideal, always backing up your data to the cloud.

Most small businesses don’t have the budget of a major city, but the beauty of cloud backup is that both small business and major cities can do the same disaster recovery for a fraction of the cost of setting up new infrastructure. There are plans for the city of San Jose – in the heart of Silicon Valley – to migrate to cloud backup as part of their disaster recovery infrastructure. Can your business do it as well? The answer is absolutely.
