Firewall HA setup with Juniper NS50s

One item I’ve done repeatedly while doing network consulting services is configuring high availability (HA) networks. The recommended way is Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). This requires that you have two firewalls for every location and they run in active/passive mode.

In our case, we’re using Juniper Netscreen 50s. With these, you use a similar protocol that’s proprietary called NSRP.

Attached is a quick guide to setup NSRP between these firewalls in what they call NSRP-Lite. Implementation is easy. The biggest issue is that it requires an open port to do a heartbeat between the two units. In our implementation, we use ethernet4.
