What is Azure OpenAI Service?

Written by Mike Solinap
Published on June 28, 2024

Artificial Intelligence is on the rise, with many companies harnessing its unique capabilities. Microsoft is no different, implementing AI into many of its products. Most recently, Microsoft has implemented a generative AI tool for Azure. This tool is called Azure OpenAI Service.

What is Azure?

Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform offering a wide range of cloud services. Azure offers IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS solutions used for computing, analytics, storage, and networking. Users can build, deploy, and manage applications with Azure due to Microsoft-managed data centers. Additionally, users may store, process, and analyze large volumes of data for business insights. Azure is a flexible system, supporting various frameworks and tools including third-party software. Its scalability and security capabilities combined with its pay-as-you-go model make it a great cloud computing platform for many businesses.

What is Generative AI?

Azure OpenAI Service is a generative AI tool, but what does this mean? Gen AI is a term for artificial intelligence systems capable of creating new content from sophisticated algorithms. Examples of content include text, images, videos, etc. All of the content it creates is based on the data used for its training.

A common feature of Gen AI is language models. Language models allow the AI to understand and generate human language. GPT models, developed by OpenAI, are extensively trained language models. These models are fed so much text data they can generate human-like responses. Azure OpenAI Service utilizes GPT models to implement its extensive capabilities.

Implementing Azure OpenAI Service

This tool is a wonderful example of using AI models to increase efficiency.  While AI should not fully replace the human workforce, it is a great tool for answering questions, summarizing content, and developing code across multiple industries.
