Replacing IBM DOORS: Which Path Is Right?

Replacing IBM DOORS- Which Path Is Right? featured image

Legacy IBM DOORS remains a mature requirements management platform, particularly for complex and regulated engineering programs. It provides structured specifications, baselines, electronic signatures, change management, and multi-level traceability.

However, many versions of DOORS are no longer viable without upgrades, which take time and manpower to perform.  Standard support for IBM Rational DOORS 9.6.x has already ended, and standard support for IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management 7.0.3 ended on September 30, 2026.  Extended support provides some additional runway through 2028, but with limitations, including no critical-defect coverage. Organizations still relying on these platforms have time to plan a thoughtful migration, but the clock is already running, and waiting too long can significantly reduce your options.  The alternatives below take different approaches to modernizing that environment.

How the Alternatives Differ

Codebeamer

Codebeamer is the best fit for replacing DOORS with a broader ALM platform that already syncs with many of your existing tools. It combines requirements, risk, test, and quality management with end-to-end traceability.  Codebeamer is particularly well suited to medical device, automotive, aerospace, and other regulated product development environments where requirements need to connect directly to risks, tests, and development artifacts.  Connecting to tools like GitLab, Jira, and Windchill out of the box, Codebeamer is a powerful ALM tool with serious AI capabilities being implemented by PTC.

Jama Connect

Jama Connect is the best fit when requirements management remains the center of the engineering process.  It provides requirements authoring, reviews and approvals, version control, test management, impact analysis, and end-to-end traceability.  Jama is a more focused requirements and product-development solution than a broad ALM/development platform, but still fits as a great replacement for DOORS users.

Jira and easeRequirements

If the above solutions are not suitable, a great alternative is using Jira + easeRequirements (formerly R4J).  This solution is the best fit for organizations already invested heavily in Atlassian. easeRequirements turns Jira issues into structured requirements and adds requirements hierarchies, traceability, coverage analysis, and change-impact analysis while retaining Jira workflows, reporting, and dashboards.

Bottom line

For a DOORS replacement, I would position the choices this way:

Codebeamer → strongest option when the company needs requirements + risk + testing + ALM in a regulated engineering environment, and integration out of the box is important.

Jama → strongest option when sophisticated requirements management, reviews, and traceability are the primary needs, and solutions exist for other areas.

Jira + easeRequirements → strongest option when the company wants to consolidate requirements into its existing Atlassian environment and avoid introducing another major engineering platform.

The important caveat is that Jira + easeRequirements should not automatically be treated as equivalent to Codebeamer or Jama for highly regulated/safety-critical development.  It can provide substantial RM capability, but the complete solution depends more heavily on how Jira, workflows, apps, testing, risk management, and compliance controls are architected.  Luckily, SPK’s team is an experienced easeRequirements and Atlassian Gold Solution Partner, and we can support your needs.  For an in-depth comparison of each solution, contact the SPK and Associates team to help guide your decision based on your organization’s needs.
